With perseverance and support from fellow recruiters, Jeff Linck has achieved 25 years in the recruiting industry.

Linck’s original career as a  Software Engineer took a detour when he was laid off from his product management position in 1988.  A friend in Human Resources asked if he had ever considered recruiting. As chance had it, Linck had previously interviewed to be a recruiter, but the timing wasn’t right. This time, though, recruiting proved to be the perfect fit.

“You can set your own hours, and you can make as little or as much money as you want depending on how good you are at it,” Linck said. “You can control your own destiny and not worry about getting laid off again. It also provides work-life balance.  It allowed me to do things with the kids when they were younger. I could do things with them during the day and work in the evening.”

Linck opened his own firm, Enterprise Search Associates, in 1990.  The firm specializes in the recruitment and placement of Information Technology professionals in the Dayton and Cincinnati areas in Southwest Ohio and beyond. In addition to direct placements, Enterprise Search Associates can place candidates in contract and contract-to-direct assignments through contract staffing back-office Top Echelon Contracting, Inc.

“I have 25 years of experience and Melinda O’Neil, partner in the firm has 18,” Linck said. “Not many recruiting agencies can say they have that much experience. We also have the ability to do a one-two punch.  Whether they need contracting or direct hire, we have the ability to do that from here for any area in the United States.”

Over the past 25 years, Linck has witnessed a number of changes in the recruiting industry.  He has noticed that more companies now have in-house recruiters, so when they come to him, he knows they have a position they can’t fill on their own.  He has also noticed a dramatic change in the pace of recruiting.

“I started in an age when everything was mailed,” Linck said. “Then they came out with this machine called the fax. Then once everything was computerized, everything could be emailed.”

He also points to the emergence of recruiter networks, such as Top Echelon Network, of which he is a member. Linck credits the support of other recruiters, including his Top Echelon Network Trading Partners and his business partner Melinda O’Neil, as one of the secrets of his success in a notoriously tough industry. He also credits his own tenacity.

“I hate to lose,” he said with a laugh.

As he starts the next chapter of his career, Linck sees contract staffing as a key component.  As work becomes more virtual, contract assignments are increasing in popularity, and recruiting is getting less geographically specific.  His firm’s relationship with Top Echelon Contracting allows them to do more contract staffing and branch out into new geographic areas as they handle all of the setup necessary to recruit contractors in other states.  The contract staffing back-office also handles all of the administrative, financial, and legal aspects of the contract placements, including creating legal contracts with the clients and contractors, payroll processing and funding, tax withholdings and filings, unemployment, Workers’ Compensation, background checks, employee paperwork and issues, benefits, and more.
